Thinking of Switching Law Firms? Here’s What You Need to Know (Spoiler: It’s Easy)

At Goodwill Law, we know that choosing the right lawyer matters — and sometimes, that means making a change. If you’re considering moving to a new law firm, you might be wondering how complicated the process is. The good news? It’s incredibly straightforward.

There’s No Red Tape

Under New Zealand law, there are no formal requirements for moving to a new law firm. You don’t need to notify the Law Society or get your old lawyer’s permission. You’re free to engage a new lawyer at any time, for any reason.

If you choose to move to us, we’ll handle the process of contacting your current firm and arranging for your files to be transferred. Most of the time it’s a quick and professional exchange between firms — no awkward phone calls, no fuss.

What About My Files?

Once you’ve authorised us to act, where we need to upload original documents, we’ll request these from your previous lawyer. They’re professionally bound by the Lawyers and Conveyancers Act (Lawyers: Conduct and Client Care) Rules 2008 to release your documents promptly — unless there’s a valid reason not to (like an unpaid bill).
